Alternatively, just send your probes and see what you get. If you need more info, send more probes. It’s not like they cost anything worth worrying about.
Seems like a kinda useless tool to me, but OGame players like their calculators I guess.
I agree with Neil, it’s rude to call it useless.
I find it useful and use quite often, so if Shuttle California is useless to only you don’t call it useless.
First, I really like this tool. In particular, I like to use it backwards to calculate the defender’s ESP level. I send some probes, enter my info into the sim and guess the defender’s ESP level. If the sim produces a report that matches mine, then I’ve guessed correctly. If not, I adjust the defender’s ESP level until I get it right.
Second, while I’m not a big fan of censorship, I think that the second comment of quux’s comment is inappropriate. Proposing an alternative strategy that quux prefers, great. But calling a free tool useless just because it doesn’t fit your model of play, just rude.
Especially when this is such a great site and advertisement free.
And I’m proud to post this comment with my full, real-life name.

Neil, how is this tool useful?
Are you saying we should be thankful for all the useless but free things out there?
Don’t take me wrong… I just don’t get it. What’s the use of guessing your enemies esp level and then confirm it? I mean, you’ll know what they’ll know about your ships, but real targets won’t have low levels.
I agree with Neil, this tool can come in handy, as, calculating you’re victim’s exact EspLvl in order to send the right amount of probs, yet, I don’t think we should do such a fuzz about it, It’s all cool and handy-dandy (sometimes), but, that’s all.
I also believe that what he meant by “Especially when this is such a great advertisement-free page” is that we should appretiate all presented here, whether we find it useful, or not so useful at the moment and consider it as presents from really nice and open-heart peeps that don’t mind wasting their time to give us a better gameplay.
Oh, by the way, Neil, I don’t recommend you using you real name in public websites, since you could be a victim of idendity theft, and I don’t think you want anyone to impersonating you out there, haha ;]
PS:
Sorry, if I commited any kind of spelling errors or such, I’m not very good at speaking english :S
A little off topic, but this tool seems to be showing me that espionage is not so valuable to the turtle player because all the attacker has to do is to send more probes to overcome level differences. I would be better off spending my resources on more defense, it seems.
I like this tool. It’s helping our fledgling alliance identify exactly how many probes we must sacrifice to get the information we need–and at this early stage, we kinda need to know exactly how much.
I agree. OK, so probes are only 1k crystal but you send 3, they get trashed and you get res.
Do you send 6 then 7 then 8 then 9 until you get all the info or just send 30 and be doe with it.
The thing is 1k crystal may not be much but over time the waste builds up
The tool is not one that I will need all of the time but I am here so obviously I wanted to save myself a couple of K. Someone had thrown a shedload of probes at a target to find the techs and I wanted to see a couple of other planets so I looked up this so I could send just enough to see the buildings while minimising the chance of being spotted.
Also, as noted, for new players small amounts of resource are all the more important and looking at this will help get the feel of what is shown at various level differences without mildly costly trial and error.
I look forward to comparing other calculators to the ones I have been writing for my alliance.
Just thought that I’d post a tip on another way to save probes – especially if they are being blown up when investigating your target.
A really handy feature that I’ve found is the notes tool (found at the top of the screen – opens a new window). I have a note that contains all of the information that I find important on targets I plan on raiding repeatedly (or DON’T plan on investigating again), and then I only need to send enough probes to get updated information on stuff likely to have changed, rather than the entire report again.
For me, since I mostly restrict my raids to inactive players, that means that I’m recording what their income is (how much metal/crystal/deut mines they have, and what their power supply is like), and what (if any) defenses they have, then in the future I only need to send out a single probe to check their current resources because I already have written down the rest of the information.
I notice that this calculator does not determine the chances of the probe being detected which results in battle. Is that calculation done elsewhere on this website? Or, could that be added here where it would also be useful?
Lawrence, detection chance is based upon a combination of how much fleet is in orbit & difference in espionage levels, not just espionage levels alone.

I’m proud of my nickname, too.

Nice calculator and thanks for putting it up.

way better than blowing up probes thumbsup
